Textile Center Board Updates
Celebrate with us!
Reserve your table for Textile Center’s 25th Anniversary Gala set for Monday, October 21, 2019.
We invite you to join us for Textile Center’s 25th Anniversary Gala, which will take place at the Profile Event Center* in Minneapolis from 6 to 9 pm on Monday, October 21, 2019. If you haven’t marked your calendar, please do so now for an evening of fashion, food, music, and fun!
Tables for 8 and 6 will go on sale this Monday, July 15. Priced at $1,000 for 8 and $750 for 6, table hosts will receive special Gala sponsor recognition. Remaining single tickets will go on sale Tuesday, September 3, so now is the best time to join the fun in sponsoring a table to celebrate with your nearest and dearest.
The big question many of us will be asking each other: “What will you wear?” Creative attire is encouraged! Showcase your favorite clothing item or look, from vintage, to cocktail, to wearable art. Show us the look that inspires your creativity! Hurry, tables go on sale July 15! Get your tickets at: textilecentermn.org/25th-gala. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, October 21!
— Linda McShannock & Lisa Steinmann, 25th Anniversary Gala Co-Chairs
* The Profile Event Center is located just three blocks east of Textile Center at 2630 University Avenue SE. There is ample free guest parking, and valet parking will be included at no extra charge!

FUND DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Last week the Minnesota State Arts Board announced its annual operating grant awards. Textile Center will receive $71,702, up from $68,927 last year, and $42,462 two summers ago.
While it was booked in June, we received payment of $20,000 from the Rosemary and David Good Family Foundation last week to support the upcoming year of Youth Fiber Art Guild at three Minneapolis sites: Division of Indian Work on Lake Street, Plymouth Christian Youth Center in North Minneapolis, and Luxton Learners (a program of East Side Neighborhood Services that serves residents of Glendale Townhomes - Minneapolis Public Housing Authority) in Prospect Park.
Our search continues for a Fund Development staff person. Nancy Gross and I interviewed two candidates among the applications we received. One accepted a post elsewhere, and the other decided to not proceed with the next round of interviews, primarily due to our benefits package and salary not meeting her needs. We were searching for a Fund Development Manager, and found that most of the candidates were overly qualified for the position (previously serving as directors elsewhere) or they lacked fundraising experience. We will post again by early next week, and we are rethinking the position as more entry level, such as fund development and events coordinator — who would work with me on the annual fund, and lead future garage sales. (Our garage sales are unique …. providing a great connection to many of our donors among our core constituents.) The market for fundraisers is very competitive.
Tomorrow afternoon (from 1 to 2:30 pm) I am leading an indigo dyeing event for 16 Leadership Circle members. We are going to have some fun using Shibori techniques! Next week we have another Leadership Circle event (2 to 3 pm Thursday, July 25, at MIA) to participate in a tour with Linda McShannock of an exhibition she curated: The Art of High Style: Minnesota Couture 1880 – 1914.
FACILITIES COMMITTEE
We had a meeting yesterday, and we are pleased to report that the Kahn family (owners of the buildings adjacent to Textile Center) have agreed to meet in August. They would like to talk about joint development rather than a land sale (but this doesn’t rule out land sale). We look forward to meeting with the Kahn family next month, and we will keep you posted. Thank you for keeping this information confidential.
FINANCE COMMITTEE
Attached are the June financials … the overview and spreadsheet. We are making up for ground lost due the April garage sale not meeting goal (thanks to a major winter storm). Shop income is now ahead of its year-to-date goal, making up for slower months earlier in the fiscal year. Also, the multi-day trunk show sales with our two guest teaching artists from India — Abdul Jabbar Khatri and Sufiyan Khatri — was approximately $11,000 (gross sales) in late June/early July!
EDUCATION & EXHIBITIONS
Tracy, Scarlett, and Rebeca are in the midst of a busy summer … with summer youth camps now in full swing, and with exciting national programs. New exhibitions will opening Wednesday, August 14, 2019, from 5:30 to 7 pm. https://textilecentermn.org/category/exhibitions/coming-up/
The McKnight Foundation will be announcing Textile Center’s new McKnight Artist Fellowships by the end of this month. Rebeca is our new Fellowships and Events Coordinator, and she and Tracy are now preparing for the launch of this program later this year, including the opening of the application process for mid-career artists. We will award two $25,000 fellowships by early 2020. This is a very exciting milestone for Textile Center!
TOURING & EXCURSIONS
This past weekend we had a successful trip to Santa Fe for the International Folk Art Market. We had 27 patrons total (including Mariana from our board, and Sharon and I from staff).
Coming up: our tour to Japan in late September, and a tour to India in early January. (Both are sold out.) These trips are helping to build strong ties among our travelers and Textile Center. If you are on Facebook or Instagram, you can find a series of photos that I have posted on Textile Center’s social media from the two trips to Morocco and last fall’s tour of Guatemala.
If you would like to reserve a tables for 8 or 6, please contact Sharon or me. (We can collect payment later.) You can email Sharon at smulhollam@textilecentermn.org.
